Harvesting SPEED! Taking all that strength and applying some dynamic explosiveness to chase down your prey

When I lived in San Antonio, I had the opportunity to work with Velocity Sports to help promote their brand and utilize their curriculum. This brand was a huge name, and still has an impact within the United States at certain locations. This opportunity was presented to me while originally being hired as a youth coach for sports programming. It all started like this…

Originally, I was hired by “The Training Ground” in San Antonio to be a youth sports coach, promoting curriculums that pertained to the sports soccer, baseball, and basketball. This service started with youth as young as two, and went all the way to five years of age. To expand our services, we began to create our own curriculums that required more rigorous tasks that would require the skills of youth as old as six and seven years old. We then began to promote a fitness curriculum that would not just teach students basic movement patterns, but also promoted health and fitness concepts such as the human anatomy, energy systems, and nutrition as well. As we continued to progress forward we continued to improve the curriculum, expanded our ability and then found our ways to partnering with Velocity Sports Performance as another outlet for training youth of various ages. As time progressed, I went from being a part time sports coach to a managerial position, eventually leading me to becoming the director of operations during my time at the Training Ground. I started this job in 2012 while working on my master’s degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio. I eventually left this job early in 2015.

When I first started this job, I felt I knew it all. The more we discussed curriculum design and the program, I felt I had more to offer and eventually asked if I could modify some of the programs in order to make them more advanced and rigorous. Basically, our program was about skill acquisition. It started with youth as young as two years old learning to run, move, and begin to partake in the basic movement patterns of kicking, catching, and throwing. As time went on, each level of the program required more of each student and they learned to start performing these movements with more precision and eventually having them attempt to “master” all of them. This mindset of programming and teaching brought much fulfillment to my life, and once we acquired the opportunity to work with Velocity Sports, I began to have a deeper understanding of speed development for youth, learning the ins and outs of how to go from being fast to acquiring deadly speed!

Now, having had the opportunity to work with Velocity Sports and being a high school coach for so long, I have developed even more knowledge about speed training and although I am someone that promotes strength training and programming, I also have an extensive resume that entails programming speed and agility programming for many athletes. I figured why not promote this information for others, so instead of them saying “oh yeah, Harvesting Strength has all these big and thick guys” people will now say…

“Oh yeah, Harvesting Strength has all these big and thick guys, BUT THEY ARE SUPER FAST TOO!”

Now although that statement doesn’t have as much jazz and creativity as my previous posts, it’s a work in progress. Harvesting Speed is a new project I am promoting, working to help program for not just strength, but speed and development as well. When you break down the term CSCS, it is meant to showcase someone who is a “certified strength and conditioning specialist”, I’d love for it one day to change to say “certified in strength, conditioning and speed”…but for now I will settle with the current status of this certification!

For the next few weeks, I will be showcasing some of the programming I have developed with a client of mine, working on his mechanics of speed and ability throughout a 12-week program. What we will breakdown is the mechanics of sprinting, running, and being able to apply dynamic explosiveness to take down any insubordinate scum that linger the streets at the long hours of night. Its time to take that strength and apply some dynamic explosiveness to chase down your prey and be the alpha dog, brethren! Stay tuned for more literature to come…
